IVF with Donor Sperm in Greece
EmBIO’s IVF with donor sperm program makes it possible for couples to build a family when the husband/partner has
- no sperm
- a poor semen analysis
- a harmful genetic disorder that could be inherited from the male parent
Sperm donation also makes it possible for single women and lesbian couples to become pregnant.
EmBIO Fertility Center has performed thousands of fertility treatments using donor sperm. We provide a wide selection of thoroughly screened and tested donors through the safe and reliable Danish sperm bank Cryos International. Read a success story for IVF with donor sperm in Greece.
Young healthy donors from our Sperm Bank
The sperm donors are young, healthy men from 18 to 35 years old from a broad cross-section of society. Most of them are students from institutions of higher education.
All sperm donors have undergone a strict selection process: medical examination, seminal liquid analysis, sexual history assessment, and a series of DNA and blood tests. With this process we make sure they are not carriers of any sexually transmitted or infectious diseases, such as:
- HIV
- hepatitis B and C
- syphilis
- cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- gonorrhea
- chlamydia
- streptococcal species
- trichomonas, or
- hereditary diseases.
Only about 1 out of 20 candidates becomes a sperm donor, because of this selection process. The semen is bottled and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. The frozen semen can be stored like this for years.
Every six months, the sperm donors are retested for infectious diseases to ensure none exist and to maintain our high-quality standards. If a man retests negative and meets all standards again, then the semen samples may be used by EmBIO.
The donors receive a small remuneration, but we believe they are genuine in their desire to help others. They are fully informed of the purpose of being a donor. They sign a contract declaring they do not belong to any risk groups or had any risky behaviour (exposure to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases). They renounce all paternal rights and responsibilities and are given explicit assurance of anonymity.

Donor Anonymity in Greece
Greek legislation protects donor anonymity. We are only allowed to treat with semen from anonymous donors. The identity of anonymous donors is registered and kept strictly confidential. However, we will provide you with ample non-identifiable information on the donors to make a good selection.
Our trained IVF coordinators will help you find a match meeting your unique requirements from a diverse selection of young, healthy, high-quality donors who would love to share their gift of life with you.

Perfect Match Embio
For those of you who are to use donor’s sperm or eggs, and want your child to resemble you as much as possible or have some specific characteristics such as height, blue eyes, athletic figure, etc. in mind, EmBIO Fertility Centre offers you the "Perfect Match EmBIO".
Donor Profile
Once you specify your desired donor characteristics, you can view the donors’ extensive background profiles. These include physical characteristics (height, weight, hair, eye colour, body build, blood type), ethnic background, and special interests.
More than that, you’ll also get to know their educational and professional background and whether they’ve had children of their own. You’ll have full access to the donors’ medical history. You will have a wide selection of young, intelligent, and good-looking men from which to choose. Your best match is dependent on your individualized criteria. You make the final decision on which donor you want to be part of your treatment.
Types of Sperm Donors
We have two types of donors: Basic or Extended profile.
- Extended Profile
-
These donors are registered by a fictitious name (Eric, Bob, Bond, Cliff, etc.). Extended Profiles include comprehensive information about donors background, education, family relations, a hand written message, etc.
Normally there is a Staff impression - i.e. a short, subjective description from our staff. We do not make any control of the information given in the extended profiles except those given in Basic profile. This information is published as we receive them.
- Basic Profile
-
These donors are registered with a number (3456, 8756, 11250, etc.).
Only registered by few characteristics (race, ethnicity, eye colour, hair colour, height, weight, blood type and in most cases education / occupation). No staff impression and no photos. We do not make any control of the education/occupation. Whether to choose a donor with Basic or Extended profile is a very difficult decision. If many data is important to you, you should choose a donor with extended profile.
Single women and lesbians who often have an explicit need to keep information for the children, may have a preference for extended profile donors.
If you want to know as little as possible about the donor, you should choose one with a basic profile. In many cases heterosexual couples prefer a man with a basic profile in order to protect their own interests as a family.
What characteristics are important?
The goal is to closely match the genetic characteristics of the male parent or, if single or a lesbian couple, characteristics you would like your child to have. Traits might be race, complexion, eyes colour, hair colour, height and weight. People have two genes for eyes colour: blue and brown, and the gene for brown is the dominant gene. Green and grey colours are caused by genetic mixing and belong to the blue group.
Hair colour and type are genetically more complicated. Our hair colour categories are Blond, brown, dark brown, black and red.
When choosing a blood type, women who are Rh negative will need semen from a man who also is Rh negative.
The information included in the Sperm Donor Characteristic and Release Form:
- Donor ID-No.

Fertility Treatment Options
Today’s scientific advancements allow us to eliminate fertility obstacles like low sperm quality, infectious diseases, or genetic disorders. Our successful IVF treatments have helped more than 30,000 babies be conceived since 1996.
EmBIO’s fertility staff are specialized and experienced in all methods of IVF treatment, giving us an advantage in treatment success compared to other fertility clinics. A couple or single woman can start their family through:
- IVF with sperm donation
- IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) into the eggs
- Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
- IVF with embryo donation
- any other specialized fertility treatment
The IUI insemination is made by injecting the sperm with a thin tube inside the patient’s uterus at the time of ovulation. IUI is a painless procedure.
Using the donor’s sperm during an in vitro fertilization procedure is also possible. IVF is the process of introducing an egg to sperm outside the body in a laboratory to achieve fertilization. The sperm cells can fertilize the egg in liquid culture in a petri dish (traditional IVF). Alternatively, an embryologist inserts a single spermatozoon (ICSI) into the egg to ensure fertilization. The fertilized eggs are transferred into the patient’s uterus.
IVF with sperm donation in Greece: Success Rates
Compared to other treatments, the IUI success rate is lower (about 40% per attempt). In comparison, the IVF ICSI success rate is higher (67% per attempt). When coupled with donor eggs, our IVF specialists have consistently achieved success rates reaching 78% per cycle.
