Treatment of Uterine Septum
Uterine septa are removed by a hysteroscopic approach. Hysteroscopy is a procedure where a small telescopic camera (hysteroscope) is inserted via the vagina, through the cervix, and into the uterine cavity. Preoperatively, imaging studies, such as an HSG (hysterosalpingogram), are performed in order to determine the length and thickness of the septum. The operative hysteroscope is then used to resect the septum, usually with the use of hysteroscopic scissors. Laparoscopy is usually performed at the same time as the hysteroscopy to differentiate the uterine septum from other uterine anomalies that have a similar hysteroscopic appearance, but which cannot be corrected by hysteroscopy.
